Capacity building in Smart and Innovative eNERGY management

Buildings have an unique environmental operational profile dependent on many factors that include the period of their design and construction, how they may be designed, retrofitted and operated over their lifetime to meet continuously evolving building standards relating to climate, structure, occupant health and engagement, energy systems efficiency and eventual decarbonisation. This presentation outlines an holistic approach to holistic environmental performance of buildings focusing specifically on the operation of retrofitted buildings at a commercial scale. The concept of a matrix of assessment factors will be presented that provides a roadmap and potential underpinning methodological and technology frameworks needed to consider and address a range of environmental, human-social, energy, ICT, carbon and economic considerations. Specific uses cases will be used to exemplify these considerations drawn from Irish and European projects and several Ph.D. dissertations.
